Excursion to Jawbone Marine Sanctuary

Jawbone Marine Sanctuary

Jawbone Sanctuary Reflection – Jasmine

I understand that this sanctuary should be preserved for future generations and the animals that live there and cannot adapt to other environments. We should also respect the plants and rocks that survive only in that biome.

I know that the sanctuary is home to many diverse plants, birds, animals and marine life. They all have there own purpose and we need to take care of in many ways.

I can care for the place in many ways such as not littering which can help many other areas of life on earth, decrease pollution that can poison the and make it unable to live in for all kinds of colourful fish and sea life to be happy and last but not least keep this nature and home safe and not to be destroyed or changed for the bad by human impact.

How are we called to care for our World?

Throughout this term we will be building our understanding of :

  • How to act responsibly and sustainably
  • To know that our actions impact on the environment
  • Develop an appreciation for the environment and living things

We will also explore these questions-

  1. How can we change what we do to have a positive impact for the future?
  2. What are my environmental responsibilities in being a global citizen?
  3. How do people interact with different environments?
  4. Why do we need to care for environments?
  5. How do environments change?
  6. How do living things interact within an eco-system?
  7. What effect do our actions have on the environment?
  8. Why do we need to develop sustainable practices?
  9. How are the world’s environments at risk?

Our initial understandings include:

Jake

We could be caring about our world by planting new plants and trees in our backyards.

Riley

I think that we need to care for our world by simply not harming it and respecting it more.

Mia

The Pope is spreading the word that we all need to care for the environment.

This video inspired our thinking about being Stewards of Creation!

Bridie

Many countries are trying to stop global warming by not polluting and creating less greenhouse gases.

Amelia

I think that we need to take care of our native animals and respect their habitats. The earth is not just our home  but it is home to many species of animals also.

Will

I think that it is disturbing that many people don’t care about what happens to the earth so we all need to spread the word about how to care for our world.

Connor

People litter too much. They are too lazy to throw rubbish in the bin. We need to educate people about recycling and not littering the earth.

Jack

We should limit how many trees can be cut down each year.

Peter

We can all help the world by putting rubbish in bins, recycling and using less electricity.

Ryan

WE are all called to care for our world by making better choices like walking instead of taking the car.

Lauren

I could make my neighbours aware about cleaning up our area and creating less rubbish.

Rosie

I try to reuse, upcycle, reduce rubbish and compost.

Renewable Energy – Student Inquiry Learning

DSCN2325
WE love concluding our inquiry learning into a rich topic to endeavour to answer our rich question.
“How does our knowledge and understanding of science improve our world?”
Our students met the challenge through exciting research and investigations. With a focus on sustainability and physics the students studied the impact of renewable and non renewable energy sources. They used the knowledge to create models that would harness renewable energy and help our world.

The students created:

Social Justice Mini Fair

Today our school had a social justice mini fair, to raise money for Bahay Tuluyan, so they could build a playground in the Philippines. We all love to play and have access to such wonderful playgrounds, so we think that they should too and then they will have as much fun as we do.

At the mini fair, each class organised a stall to recycle or reuse goods like toys and books. Other people donated sweets and cakes to add to the fun of the fair.

The stalls included:

  • Book stall
  • Toy stall
  • Cake stall
  • Lolly stall
  • Sport stall
  • Mini games
  • Hairspray and Face paint
  • Chocolate Throw

We enjoyed these stalls because all of the cakes, items etc. was donated by our local community and school. The face painting and the chocolate throw were big hits at the mini fair.

Overall it was a successful and exciting day and we raised $1700 to help Bahay Tuluyan build a playground for the children in the Philippines.

Passionate Class Discussions

I have set my self the goal of promoting Student Voice, within my class. I want to give students the opportunity to share their ideas, to listen to each other and build confidence in discussions. I also want to give every student the chance to speak, to show that all opinions and ideas are valued.
Today we began to share our ideas within 1 minute time frames, speed chatting, with 3 different people. The topic was ‘How do we promote a Cleaner and Greener Australia.’ The students had to put forward an argument that they were passionate about. The buzz between the pairs and passion in the discussions was fabulous.
After the speed chatting we moved into a circle with the whole class. Every student was invited randomly to share the ideas.
The level of engagement was fantastic. I was careful to include every student and model good listening with eye contact, empathy and encouragement. Even the quieter students were brought into the discussion with cold calling. There was no waiting for hands to go up. Ideas that were achievable were recorded so that action could be taken.
It was a valuable lesson, which not only gave every student an opportunity to be heard but also a chance to share their knowledge and learning from this terms inquiry.
I will be incorporating the speed chatting and whole class discussions more regularly into my planning.

Some student ideas for taking action to promote a Cleaner and Greener Australia:
* write letters to the government to promote renewable energy
* reduce costs of solar panels to encourage everyone to use them
* set up connections with Coles Supermarkets and take-away venues to recycle plastic bags
* sign petitions for renewable energy use and limiting the use of coal
* using rubbish dumps for the methane gas to power electricity plants
* recycling, reducing and reusing old things

Tree Planting Day

Today, the environment team helped National tree planting day by planting trees with Whitehorse city council. The purpose was to help the biodiversity of Simpsons Park and creating new habitats for bugs and animals –
Rylee
We also learnt about understory which is little plants growing under a big tree – Gemma
It was a great idea because we got to participate in a community event along with other schools – Georgia
It was also good because we helped the Mitcham community and neighbours – James
The people who live near the park now have more plants to make their local park look fresh – Amelia & Steph
First we planted the plants and then we watered them. We did this by squeezing the tube, taking out the
seedlings and placing it in the pre-dug hole – Daniel
I enjoyed today, because we met new people from other schools and I learnt how to plant a tree properly –
Rosie
Today was really enjoyable. It was great to learn about planting trees. I had fun co-operating with others –Maddy

Clean Up Australia Day

Clean Up Australia Day DSCN1306 DSCN1289 DSCN1300 DSCN1302 DSCN1291

Today at school our Sustainability Team organised a Clean Up Day. Each class had a designated area to clean. The team leaders had special gloves and bags to collect rubbish and recyclables. They also had tongs for really yucky rubbish.
It is great to all get involved, work together and help to “Keep Australia Beautiful.”
I think that it will make everyone think about where they throw their rubbish also.
We should all try to:

  • REDUCE our rubbish
  • REUSE certain materials
  • RECYCLE when we can

We hope that everyone can take part in Clean Up Australia Day this weekend. For more information, here is the official website!

Personal Learning Tasks on Environmental Issues

http://prezi.com/aseaqcwlnmnj/snow-leopards/

Raquel and Gemma
We are passionate about helping to save the Snow Leopards. They are an endangered species. They are hunted for their fur and body parts that are used in traditional medicines. Their habitats are also being destroyed. We taught all the grade 5/6 students about their plight and ran a sweet stall to raise money to send to the Save the Snow Leopard Foundation. It was great learning together and discovering more about the environment and the beautiful snow leopards.

Paper Tigers

Siobhon and Gemma
Sumatran Tigers have lived for over 6000 years and we want them to live for 6000 more. Paper companies need to change the way they source wood and stop clearing the forests. The tigers have lost over 60% of their forests, which have been cleared due to land being cleared to plant trees to make paper.
Paper companies need to think about what they are doing and think more about the environment. We should all be using less paper also.
